A Suffolk computer expert predicts that artificial intelligence (AI) will replace human coders in 10 years.

Matthew Applegate, founder of the Creative Computing Club, said, "I'm teaching the last generation of coders. We are about to be replaced by AI very soon."

Mr. Applegate started the club in 2012 with the motto "50% work, 50% play."

"AI will gradually become part of everything—pop music, writing... plumbers are safe! Technology is always an interesting journey," he said.

His prediction comes as a House of Lords committee suggests we should embrace the benefits of AI, not just focus on the risks.

The Communications and Digital Committee's report examined large language models (LLMs), which power generative AI tools like ChatGPT. Mr. Applegate said, "They trained AI using GitHub, an online repository with both the best and worst examples of code. This allowed the AI to identify best practices early on.

"So, we've quickly overcome many issues. We probably have about ten more years of teaching coding."
